best percussive massage gun

CRISP. Review : Best Percussive Massage Guns

  • Theragun Prime
  • Hyperice Hypervolt
  • Pulseroll

Summary

It’s very difficult to choose just which device we liked better and ultimately it’s a toss-up between features and price.

Whilst the Theragun Prime feature-rich and beautiful, it doesn’t have the head attachments that we really enjoyed from the Hypervolt and Pulseroll. We absolutely loved the smart features, battery life and just how silent it was.

The Hypervolt, however, is absolutely fantastic for those with a slightly higher budget. It’s different in its design but packed with a lot of punch. This probably caters to both the very active and not as active individual. A really good all-rounder.

Pulseroll has already made a name for itself in the industry and with its massage gun, you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck. We can’t help but appreciate that little extra you get in terms of a carry case and added attachments either.

As the home fitness industry continues to grow, its one product, in particular, that keeps catching our eye. The Percussive Massage Gun.

Even if you’re somewhat semi-interested in health and fitness, you’ve problem seen a few of these pop up on your radar through targeted advertising on Social media.

Deep tissue massage guns, Percussive Massage Gun or just a plain old massage gun.

Whatever you want to call them, they’re certainly going through a surge right now, so the team at CRISP. decided to give you the low-down on our favourite ones out in the market right now.

Before we do that though, Let’s start right at the top.

What is Percussive Massage

As the name suggests, Percussion massage is a type of therapy that uses continuous blows to the tissue to rid soreness, stiffness and pain. Relaxation and tissue repair are also some of the other benefits you can expect.

Traditionally, It uses rhythmic tapping (percussions) to deliver vibrations or short blows to the body by cupping, hacking, beating, or plucking with the hands.

So What is a Percussive Massage Gun?

Massage guns have been widely adopted by pro athletes and those who live very active lifestyles, to aid their recovery. We actually remember it being used by Kyrie Irving whilst playing for the Cavs and wondering just what on earth it was?

Percussive massage guns are essentially battery-powered devices designed to provide around the clock unaided percussive therapy without the need for a Physiotherapist.

The main benefit of a massage gun is that it can provide constant, immediate and convenient therapy wherever you want, whenever you want.

Will, it completely eradicate those trips to Physio or Chiropractor? Probably not.  These devices shouldn’t be seen as a replacement. You’ll never beat human to human expertise but you can certainly look to provide self-myofascial release, massage and recovery in those times where you cant be seen.

As you’ll see below they all come in different shapes, sizes and designs but ultimately all of our hand-selected products provide the best in class therapy in the market today.

Therabody Theragun Prime

Theragun is one of the more recognisable products on the market and the company have just recently announced its bold move into re-branding to Therabody.

Theragun will now sit alongside Theraone, a new line of CBD products and the Therabody app to accompany its leading product via Bluetooth.

Since its inception in 2016, The Theragun has seen a vast number of adaptations in such a small amount of time. Fast forward to 2020 and the Theragun PRO is the 4th generation device just released by the tech wellness company.

In regards to the motor, Founder, Dr Jason Wersland was adamant he didn’t want to sacrifice the capabilities of the device whilst keeping the decibels down, so they created their own motor. The commercial-grade brushless motor is known as QuietForce Technology which is as quiet as an electric toothbrush and after testing it, we can this is true.

Theragun Prime now offers double the battery life of those generations before it.

Unlike others in the market currently, Theragun Prime is a smart percussive therapy device as it allows users to connect the device to the Therabody App. Within the app, you’ll be able to get detailed videos and instruction on all body parts and common pain ailments. It can tell you the most effective speed needed, the ideal length of time and our favourite,  it lets you know if you’re working into your muscle to deep.

You can also ask Siri to save your favourite routines and start via voice commands as soon as the device is connected.

There’s no denying the Theragun Prime’s design is a thing of beauty, not only is it a joy to use but its also beautiful to look at.

In the box, you’ll get the device, a carry case, 4 attachments, and a charger.

Hyperice Hypervolt

Another device on the market that we absolutely adore is the Hypervolt by Hyperice. Simply put, you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck.

At £399 its a whole £150 cheaper than the Theragun Pro.

On first impressions, the Hypervolt looks completely different from the Theragun products. Its design encapsulates the look of a gun funnily enough and a very futuristic one at that.

On the reverse of the gun, you’ll find a bunch of different LED’s to signify speed settings and Pressure indicators and battery life.

If those lights weren’t enough, there is one more Amazon Echo-esque ring LED which lights up upon powering up and let you know when it’s fully charged.

Its three-speed settings are able to give you a maximum 3200 percussions per minute but to be honest we never really used it on level 2 let alone 3. The first speed was more than adequate enough to give us the beat down we needed.

The Hypervolt weighs a total of 2.5 pounds and features Hyperice’s Quiet Glide Technology. This machine is very very quiet.

In the box, you’ll get 4 interchangeable heads to suit your massage style or tailored to a specific body part. All are very easy to change too, just twist slightly, pull the old one out and pop a new one back in.

Pulseroll

Our third and final favourite device on the market right now comes from Pulseroll.

Official suppliers of GB Boxing, British weightlifting and Loughborough Sport. The Pulseroll has well established itself within the vibration training and recovery arena and is scientifically proven to ease muscle soreness.

The success off their foam rollers has naturally led them into the world of Massage guns and its a product we really enjoyed using.

The premise is the same and the design is very similar to that of the Hypervolt except that its toned town black colour with red accents.

The Pulseroll massage gun actually offers more head attachments than the other two devices, with 6 in the box compared to Hypervolts 5 and Theraguns 4.

We really liked the in-depth handbook of exercises to do at home, which attachments to use and for how long. For beginners, this is exactly what is needed to start using the product out of the box.

Then there is the carry case. The Puleroll actually and a shoulder strap attachment along with top handle making it a truly portable bit of kit to take anywhere with you.

It’s 4 power settings manages to push out 3300 RPM’s and the device itself weighs only 1kg which is in-line just a tad lighter than the Hypervolt.

It’s 3-hour battery life also means it will keep banging away a whole hour longer than the Theragun.
