A Voyage Worth Taking

The One Piece manga series is one of the best-selling and most beloved manga series in the world, having sold over 470 million copies since its debut in 1997, currently still ongoing with over 950 chapters released so far.

Created by Eiichiro Oda, One Piece tells the story of Monkey D. Luffy, a young pirate who sets out on a quest to find the legendary treasure known as “One Piece”.

Along the way, he meets many friends and foes, and battles his way through many adventures as he searches for his ultimate goal.

The manga has been adapted into an extremely successful anime series that has spawned numerous movies, specials, and video games, with this latest installment – One Piece Odyssey – a pledge to bring things back to form after a mixed reception to previous efforts.

One Piece Odyssey follows Luffy, the main protagonist, and his band of pirates as they search for the legendary One Piece, a treasure said to grant any wish.

Along the way, Luffy will face off against powerful enemies, uncover secrets and mysteries, and forge strong bonds with his crew. Players must strategize and use their wits to navigate the islands and overcome the obstacles in their way.

With its unique combat system, engaging storyline, and colorful characters, One Piece Odyssey offers a thrilling journey for fans of the manga – thanks to an original tale crafted by its creator.

The game does a great job at capturing the spirit of the One Piece manga. The story has plenty of twists and turns, and players will find themselves immersed in the world of One Piece.

The pacing of the game is perfect, with just the right amount of time spent on story moments and combat. There are also plenty of opportunities to learn more about the characters, their motivations and their backgrounds.

The game features some incredibly memorable boss battles that are sure to test your skills and keep you entertained. Overall, One Piece Odyssey offers an exciting and engaging storyline that will keep you coming back for more.

Graphics and Audio

One Piece Odyssey is a visually stunning game, made even more so by the capabilities of the Xbox Series X. The game sports an incredibly detailed anime art style and is packed with vibrant colors, giving the game a truly unique and immersive experience.

The characters are all beautifully animated, and their movements are smooth and fluid. Performance and fidelity modes enable players to choose between a silky 60fps, or close to 4K resolution at 30fps, with us opting for the former to make traversal that bit more manageable.

The environments thrive with variety and activity, with characters (including a new cast of characters specifically for this entry) and objects being brought to life with incredible detail.

Overall, the visuals in One Piece Odyssey are incredibly impressive and take advantage of the power of the Xbox Series X to create a truly gorgeous experience.

From an audio perspective, we’re given the sole option of Japanese audio with subtitles and no option for a dubbed version in English. Incredibly rare in this day and age but a boon for fans of the anime, as the original voice cast have all reprised their roles to breathe life into an effort with slots into the lore of the series seamlessly.

Before long, it only enhances the sensation of playing through an extended version of the show, with all of the charisma and boundless joy of Luffy to the brooding ronin charm of Zoro perfectly encapsulated in the (partially) voiced segments.

Gameplay

The gameplay of One Piece Odyssey offers a variety of challenges and strategies, making it an enjoyable experience for all types of gamers.

Players take direct control of Monkey D. Luffy and his band of Straw Hat Pirates as they battle their way through an array of enemies, collecting items and working together to progress in their journey. The turn-based RPG format allows players to customize their characters by choosing different outfits and skills, providing a unique and personalized gaming experience.

The combat in the game is fluid and action-packed, requiring strategic thinking and teamwork to succeed.

Players have to make careful decisions when engaging enemies, as each character has their own set of skills and abilities that can be used to take down tougher foes. On top of that, players can also utilize special attacks and team attacks to defeat their adversaries.

That being said, despite the flexibility on how to tackle foes with the ability to split your burgeoning crew into smaller teams when taking on enemies, there is a lack of depth when it comes to strategies, and the battles – once you’ve seen the elaborate specials – can become a little familiar once you’ve found a winning strategy to steamroll the opposition.

The game also features a deep crafting system, where players can craft various items to use in battle. Players can create weapons, armor, potions, and more to help them in their quest.

Overall, One Piece Odyssey offers a fun and immersive gaming experience that allows players to explore the world of One Piece with their favorite characters.

With the RPG format, customizable characters, and deep crafting system, there’s plenty of adventure waiting in this odyssey.
