In the hustle and bustle of modern life, we often find ourselves disconnected from the natural world. However, a growing body of research suggests that reconnecting with the Earth through practices like Earthing and Grounding can profoundly affect our physical and mental well-being.

Earthing, also known as grounding, is a simple yet powerful concept that involves direct physical contact with the Earth’s surface. Scientific studies indicate that Earthing may help reduce inflammation, improve sleep, and promote overall balance in the body. One study published in the Journal of Environmental and Public Health found that grounding can positively affect various physiological parameters, such as heart rate, cortisol levels, and skin conductance.

The benefits of grounding are thought to be rooted in the exchange of electrons between the Earth and our bodies, neutralizing free radicals and reducing oxidative stress. As we go about our daily lives, surrounded by electronic devices and urban environments, we accumulate positive ions that can contribute to inflammation and various health issues. Grounding serves as a way to discharge these excess positive charges and restore balance.

Practicing Earthing doesn’t require any special equipment or elaborate rituals. Simply spending time outdoors, walking barefoot, or sitting on the grass can be enough to experience the benefits.

Products like grounding mats and sheets have also been developed to facilitate indoor grounding, allowing people to reconnect with the Earth even in urban settings.

According to new research by EE, two-fifths (40%) of Brits are expected to experience ‘Black Friday Burnout’ – stress as a result of shopping the sales. This is hardly surprising considering that over half of shoppers (57%) are looking to spend up to 10 hours hunting for deals. The younger generation, particularly those aged 25-34, are the most deal-savvy, with four-fifths planning to get involved.

The anticipation for winter deals has been palpable, with almost a third of Brits having prepared their shopping list a week in advance.

Nice to meet you both! Can you tell our readers a little more about your business?

It may be better to start from the top, could you tell us a bit about your background and how you both started Antioxi?

For those just getting into Fungi, where would be a good place to learn about them?

The best introduction I can find to date is the new Netflix documentary “fantastic fungi”. It provides such a great overview of this wonderfully overlooked species inhabiting our earth.

From there the sky’s the limit to be honest, one can keep things high level and understand which mushrooms provide which benefit or you can go as deep as actually reading the clinical trials, which will make the hairs on your arm stand up!

Funny story, every copywriter or content creator we have worked with, after doing their research into mushrooms for our business, have turned into customers. Honestly, the clinical research speaks for itself…

What’s your perception of the Fungi market at the moment, do you think awareness is growing?

Oh heck yeah. From celebs, podcasts (Joe Rogan), Netflix people are starting to see the light. Daniela says I am a tad dramatic as I write this, but I do have a knack for the theatrical.

That being said, if we set the main media aside for a second, the real shift in awareness has been anecdotally by people who take these mushrooms. When you have a friend or loved one who has been struggling with an illness for some time and they start to see health improvements, well one can’t help but take notice…

We actually watched “Fantastic Fungi” on Netflix and follow Paul Stamets’teachings, what was your thoughts on that movie, did it represent the Fungi movement well?

Oh yeah, Paul is an OG (Original Gangster) of mycology. Well sort of an OG, the real OG’s existed almost 2000 years ago as seen in their documentation of plants and mushrooms and their perceived cures for various illnesses.

Either way, the clear message that we hope people take away is a logical one, much of our atmosphere is actually made up of fungal spores and you have been interacting with these spores since the day you’ve been born. In fact, the Gutenberg institute determined that with each breath you take, you inhale between 1-10 of these aforementioned spores. Crazy thought actually…

Therefore, through the various years of research, it has become clear that our body is hardwired to respond to the compounds present in the various mushrooms. Each response being different:

Turkey tail – Beta D Glucan compounds -> C-type lectin receptors -> improves the immune system

Lions Mane–> Hericenones and Erinacines -> nerve growth factor -> improves memory loss/Alzheimer’s

What are the benefits of taking mushrooms and how often should one take them?

This is a bit of a tricky one to answer, as each mushroom is so unique in the benefits it offers.

Just like a multivitamin, mushrooms should be taken daily to really consistently benefit from them.

Mushroom quality differs based on the farming methods (organic, wild-grown, rice grown), use of the fruiting body or mycelium (this is the part of the mushroom), the extraction method (water vs ethanol vs dual extraction)

These are just a few of many but we have highlighted them as these are the fundamentals we want our customers to consider when making an educated choice.

The actual mushroom itself

Each mushroom has different compounds that provide different health benefits. Lion’s mane for example is famous for its components Hericenones and Erinacines (the components that promote its cognitive health abilities). Reishi’s true magic lies in the triterpenoids, Turkey tail PSK and PSP (both of which have been extensively studied in clinical trials for cancer) etc…

Don’t you just love how beautifully complicated mushrooms are?

What is the difference between taking a complex 8 mushroom vs say individuals mushrooms as powders?

The question follows the same premise as standing in a pharmacy looking at a multivitamin vs iron tablets. Are you looking for great coverage or are you looking to treat an iron deficiency?

Lastly, is it pronounced “Fun-J-eye” or “Fun-Guy”?

There is no hard rule for this one.

In fact, we both pronounce it differently – Daniela likes to call them fung-i, whereas I believe the correct term is “mushies.”

Is Gluten Intolerance real or imagined and how severe is it?

‘Wheat makes you fat’ and ‘removing gluten from your diet will help you lose weight are two popular nutrition myths you may have heard – but there is absolutely no medical or scientific basis for this to be the case for the average healthy individual.

The world of health and fitness is awash with misinformation. I see so many clients who have been exposed to repeated misinformation and have gone ‘gluten free’ for no real reason, with the result that they are then left with very restrictive diets and even a fear of certain foods, for no real health reason. (I am not referring to those who have a genuine intolerance to wheat or gluten, and might need to eliminate them accordingly.)

The myth that ‘wheat makes you fat’ is in part a result of the ‘clean-eating diet craze, which blames wheat for obesity and a host of other medical conditions, with people making unsubstantiated claims that cutting out gluten cured all their ailments. Yes, people who eat a lot of refined wheat flour in foods such as white bread, biscuits and pastries will indeed gain weight; and yes, if they cut out these refined foods and eat a more balanced diet (the type I prescribe to all my clients and advocate in both of my books) they’ll lose weight. But it’s not because of the wheat; it’s because they’ve improved their overall diet and meal balance, and cut out refined carbs and sugar.

There have been no scientific studies that support wheat as the culprit for our obesity epidemic, or that support a wheat-free diet for weight loss. The best thing you can do for weight loss is to replace refined white wheat (such as that in white bread, pastries, cakes, biscuits, and muffins made with refined white flour) with whole grains (like wholemeal bread, oats, brown rice, quinoa, and whole-wheat or brown rice pasta), to increase your fibre intake so that you’ll feel fuller for longer, have stable blood sugar levels and avoid cravings.

In terms of gluten, increasing diagnoses of Coeliac disease (a true gluten intolerance) has put gluten in the spotlight in recent years due to heightened awareness and better screening. However, many people mistakenly think that a gluten-free diet is the key to weight loss. This couldn’t be further from the truth.

People are blaming gluten for symptoms when it’s not the underlying cause. It’s trendy and cool, and many celebrities have endorsed gluten-free diets, so people jump on the bandwagon. Going on a gluten-free diet can be unnecessarily expensive, and will not guarantee better health or weight loss. There is no evidence to suggest that weight or fitness is improved in any way when following a gluten-free diet.

In fact, a recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that the growing popularity of gluten-free diets, endorsed by high-profile celebrities, has been driven by fashion choices rather than diagnosed health problems.

Researchers found that there has been no increase in the numbers of those suffering from Coeliac disease in the past six years, yet those on a gluten-free diet have risen threefold. The authors say that other reasons are also clearly driving the trend, including a misinformed public perception that gluten-free diets are healthier, and people are increasingly self-diagnosing themselves with ‘gluten sensitivity’ without having the typical symptoms of Coeliac disease. The study confirms that, unsurprisingly, the rising popularity of gluten-free diets is not accounted for by any increase in clinically proven cases of Coeliac disease.

The huge number of ‘gluten-free foods’ now available on supermarket shelves is also helping to boost the numbers of those shunning wheat. Although only 1% of the UK population are estimated to be affected by coeliac disease, 55% of the market is made up of non-sufferers. More than half the UK population is now buying gluten-free products, so savvy marketing also plays a huge role in influencing food choices.

Gluten-free diets are specifically designed for the 1% of the population that does have Coeliac disease and the 6% with non-Coeliac gluten sensitivity. For these people, foods containing gluten, such as wheat, rye and barley, can lead to a host of symptoms including gastrointestinal problems, skin rashes and anaemia.

For the rest of the population, however, gluten should not pose a problem. Whole-grain wheat, barley and rye are nutritional powerhouses; they are good sources of fibre, B vitamins, vitamin E, iron, magnesium and antioxidants – all of which are essential for healthy living and disease prevention.

Additionally, many gluten-free products are higher in calories and other unhealthy ingredients (such as sugar and palm oil) than their gluten-containing counterparts (as well as being much more expensive), but people are conned into thinking that anything with a ‘gluten-free’ label must be healthier and will help with weight loss, when this is nothing more than a myth.

My advice to everyone would be to stick to a healthy balanced whole-foods diet, with minimal highly processed foods, incorporating plenty of fresh vegetables, fruit, lean protein, unrefined carbohydrates and healthy fats (such as nuts, avocado, olive oil and nut butters). For those that do need to cut out or avoid gluten for medical reasons, I’d recommend steering clear of processed packaged “gluten-free” products (that are often filled with endless ingredients and junk!) and follow the same dietary advice above. I have many gluten-free recipes in both of my books and here are a few that I hope you’ll enjoy!

What Is Chlorella?

Chlorella is a single-celled species of green algae that grows in fresh-water. It is one of the earliest forms of life, with scientists believing it to be approximately 2 billion years old.

The name comes from the greek word ‘chloros’ meaing ‘green’, and the Latin word ‘ella’, which means small. Its three-speed settings are able to give you a maximum 3200 percussions per minute but to be honest we never really used it on level 2 let alone 3. The first speed was more than adequate enough to give us the beat down we needed.

Our third and final favourite device on the market right now comes from Pulseroll.

Official suppliers of GB Boxing, British weightlifting and Loughborough Sport. The Pulseroll has well established itself within the vibration training and recovery arena and is scientifically proven to ease muscle soreness.

The success off their foam rollers has naturally led them into the world of Massage guns and its a product we really enjoyed using.

It’s 4 power settings manages to push out 3300 RPM’s and the device itself weighs only 1kg which is in-line just a tad lighter than the Hypervolt.

It’s 3-hour battery life also means it will keep banging away a whole hour longer than the Theragun.
