On PS5, it promises to bring that cabinet experience into your living room: big drifts, huge nitrous blasts and a handful of wild tracks that feel ripped straight from the films. Raw Thrills’ pedigree is obvious, especially if you know their addition to the ‘Cruis’n’ series with Blast on Switch, but this particular port is a more modest proposition. 

What you get is the essence of the arcade game, with very little wrapped around it beyond not spending a pound every two minutes!

Story

Events are grouped into themed sets with paper-thin narrative labels about undercover missions, high-risk deliveries and rival crews. A short briefing might tell you that the police are closing in, or that a particular gang needs to be taught a lesson, and then you are immediately thrown back onto the track.

Dom and the core cast never take centre stage…and not even a single mention of the value of family, which is a crime in itself. 

There are no cinematic cut-scenes or extended dialogue sequences, but rather the game leans on the tone of the films – over-the-top chases, improbable explosions and family-adjacent banter – without trying to hew too closely to its blockbuster source material.

It admittedly suits the arcade heritage, but anyone expecting a properly scripted Fast & Furious campaign – RIP Crossroads – is going to find this an extremely slight package.

Gameplay

On the track, Fast & Furious: Arcade Edition is unabashedly old-school arcade racing. You choose from a small roster of eight licensed vehicles, including muscle cars and modern performance icons, then throw them around stunt-filled tracks based on locations like Hong Kong, Yellowstone and Havana. 

The driving model is loose and generous. Cars pivot eagerly into drifts with a light tap of the brake, and you are almost always better served by keeping your foot planted than by driving with any real finesse.

Nitrous sits at the centre of everything. You build a boost meter by driving aggressively and threading through traffic, then cash it in for long bursts of speed that drench the screen in motion blur. 

Events range from point-to-point sprints to lapped races and more objective-driven challenges that ask you to ram marked vehicles or smash environmental targets. Once you have ticked off first place on each track, an “Extreme” mode remixes things, but the underlying content does not change.

The biggest frustration is the rubber-banding – AI rivals refuse to let you break away. You can drive three near-perfect laps, clip one obstacle in the last corner and watch the field magically swarm around you. For casual players and younger drivers, that forced drama keeps races tense, but for anyone with a competitive streak, it quickly feels like the game is more interested in stage-managing photo finishes than rewarding skill. 

Compared with Raw Thrills’ own Cruis’n Blast conversion on Switch, which throws more tracks, more modes,four-player co-op at you and feels – ever so slightly – freer in how races unfold, this comes off as the thinner experience.

Local multiplayer is where the game is most fun. Two-player split-screen lets you recreate that arcade rivalry at home, and the forgiving handling makes it easy for people of different abilities to enjoy the same race. Online options are basic and do not add much long-term pull, so this is very much a sofa racer.

Audio

Audio is a clear carry-over from the arcade cabinet heritage – LOUD. Engines roar aggressively, turbochargers whistle and tyres squeal at the slightest provocation. Nitrous blasts arrive with a satisfying whoosh, and set-piece moments – collapsing bridges, missiles, falling trees – are underlined with big, cinematic sound effects that help sell the chaos even when the visuals are not doing anything especially advanced.

The soundtrack sticks to high-energy tracks that sit somewhere between action-film score and radio-friendly dance. You are unlikely to come away humming anything, but the tempo matches the pace on track. Brief snippets of voiceover comment on big drifts, heavy crashes and close finishes. Lines do repeat over longer sessions, yet in short bursts they add the right level of arcade chatter.

Crucially, the mix does a good job of keeping important cues audible. Approaching traffic, incoming sirens and the crunch of guardrails all cut through the music clearly, which helps with reaction times when the screen is busy.

Performance

On PS5, Fast & Furious: Arcade Edition looks and feels very much like a straight console port of an older arcade title. The cars are cleanly modelled and clearly licensed – all-American muscle from Ford, Dodge and Shelby but nary a hint of exotic European hypercars or Japanese drift machines – however lacking the fine detail you would expect from a native current-gen showcase whilst hurtling at 180mph. 

Environments are colourful and busy, with lots of moving parts and explosive set-pieces, yet close inspection reveals flat textures and simplistic lighting.

The upside is rock-solid performance – frame rates hold steady during hectic races, even when you are weaving through traffic while rockets explode in the distance. Load times between events are short thanks to the PS5’s storage, which preserves that “insert credit and go” momentum that defined the cabinet. There are no obvious streaming issues or major hitches.

DualSense support is present but understated, with some trigger resistance and rumble variation for different surfaces and collisions, but little that fundamentally improves the feel of driving. 

Verdict

Fast & Furious: Arcade Edition on PS5 delivers exactly what you would expect from a straight arcade conversion – immediate handling, insane, short tracks and – particularly in local split-screen – there are genuine highs and laughs to be had.

The problems lie in how quickly you can see everything there is to see. Six tracks and eight cars do not stretch very far; the event structure is threadbare, and heavy rubber-banding saps satisfaction from clean wins when going solo. 

When you remember that Raw Thrills’ own Cruis’n Blast on Switch delivers more content and a wilder sense of fun from the same broad template, this does feel like the weaker sibling.

As a budget party racer for Fast & Furious fans, it is serviceable. As a long-term home for arcade racing on PS5, it does run out of road a little too quickly, despite the budget £25 price point.

Only 2,000 of these are being made, each one individually numbered and boxed with bespoke packaging and a custom cloth.

At £1,380, it drops the same day as the game: June 26, 2025.

Fast-forward to today, and Broken Sword: Reforged offers a spruced-up version of George Stobbart’s world-saving romp.

Revolution Software’s efforts are clear: this is a faithful reimagining that modernises where it counts without losing a shred of the original’s wit and charm.

Story

It’s a tale that stands the test of time: an explosion in a Parisian café throws American lawyer George Stobbart into a sprawling conspiracy involving ancient knights, hidden symbols, and secrets that could alter history.

The story is just as delightfully layered as it was in the original. George, with his dry humour, is perfectly paired with Nico Collard, a savvy journalist who keeps him on his toes.

Together, they travel from shadowed catacombs to vibrant streets in pursuit of truth.

What’s new here is a subtle script polish that modernises the dialogue without losing any of the game’s classic charm.

Characters retain their unique quirks, and each interaction feels like a nod to the eccentricity of the original.

Revolution Software shows respect for what made Broken Sword memorable, retooling the narrative just enough to keep it fresh for newcomers while preserving a warm sense of nostalgia for long-time fans.

Graphics and Audio

Revolution has put in the effort to make Reforged a visual delight.

Each hand-painted backdrop has been meticulously updated with high-resolution textures, rich colours, and improved lighting that breathe life into iconic settings like the café’s ruins and the dusty back streets of Paris.

Characters are sharper, their expressions more vivid, and their movements smoother, bringing an extra layer of detail while still maintaining that slightly stiff charm we loved in the original.

The audio also gets the royal treatment. The classic soundtrack returns with a richer, more layered quality that enhances every moment, from tense scenes to quieter reflective points.

Voice acting – one of the original’s standout features – has been re-recorded for clarity, with enhanced audio effects that lend an immersive quality.

George and Nico sound like they’re right in front of you, their voices dynamically changing depending on their environment.

The effect is subtle but creates a captivating sense of place that draws you further into the mystery.

Gameplay

Staying true to its roots, Broken Sword: Reforged sticks with the tried-and-true formula of exploration, interaction, and puzzle-solving.

Revolution hasn’t gone overboard in the updates, retaining the charm of classic point-and-click gameplay while improving the experience for modern players.

Inventory puzzles remain satisfyingly quirky, but a new optional hint system has been added to keep you from getting bogged down.

The hints are subtle enough to maintain that “Aha!” moment, gently nudging players without spilling the solution.

Control-wise, Reforged feels smoother, especially for console players. Revolution has fine-tuned the interaction system so George snaps to hotspots without requiring pixel-perfect accuracy, sparing players the frustration of clicking around aimlessly.

Whether you’re on PC or console, the controls have been reworked to feel natural and responsive, allowing you to focus on the adventure instead of fumbling with mechanics.

Modernisation Done Right

Revolution’s approach to Reforged strikes a perfect balance between honouring the original and refining it for today’s audience.

They’ve stayed away from overhauling the game, opting instead for thoughtful enhancements that make the experience smoother, sharper, and more inviting.

The updated visuals, reworked audio, streamlined mechanics, and user-friendly features like contextual interactions and hints are all subtle nods to modern sensibilities without ever compromising the game’s classic heart.

Broken Sword: Reforged feels less like a remake and more like a beautifully polished version of a favourite memory.

Verdict

Broken Sword: Reforged is a masterclass in how to update a classic. Revolution Software has taken everything we loved about the original and given it a touch-up that both respects the past and makes it easier for a new audience to enjoy.

It’s not a full-on reinvention – and it doesn’t need to be. Instead, it’s an accessible, polished throwback that oozes charm, mystery, and wit.

For newcomers, it’s a fantastic entry into one of the genre’s finest, and for fans, it’s a nostalgic journey that feels as welcoming as ever.

According to new research, more than a third (36%) of young Brits believe that the next King or Queen should be chosen by a vote rather than through the time-honoured tradition of royal succession.

And if the crown was suddenly up for grabs? Nearly half (45%) of Gen Z would be more than happy to take on the challenge of ruling, with 34% convinced they’d make a better monarch than King Charles himself.

The study, commissioned by SEGA Europe to coincide with the launch of Metaphor: ReFantazio, dives into the minds of Brits young and old. While two-thirds (63%) still support having a monarchy, just 23% of Gen Z are content to let the crown pass automatically onto the first-born.

In fact, one in ten say potential royals should have to prove their worth in a good old-fashioned battle for the throne. Even the idea of winning a war is less daunting than the prospect of constant attention in the public eye and always being “on”—the main reasons people might think twice about a life of royalty.

It’s clear that Prince Harry’s candid approach resonates with the younger crowd; a whopping 64% of Gen Z believe he would be as good a monarch, if not better, than his dad.

But royal aspirations don’t stop there – some Brits have a cheeky sense of humour when it comes to their ideal rulers. Sir David Attenborough (22%) was named the most desirable King in the land, followed by Dame Judi Dench at 16%. If the nation is going to have a monarch, why not someone who’s used to narrating the wild side of life, or playing queens on the big screen?

To celebrate Metaphor: ReFantazio’s launch, SEGA and ATLUS have partnered with Sealand – yes, the world’s smallest “country,” consisting of an old WWII sea fort in the North Sea – to offer one lucky gamer the noble title of “Hand to the Sovereign Prince of Sealand.”

Despite its relatively niche nature, their unique mix of visual whimsy and whipsmart dialogue wrapped around a warm and welcoming RPG package has made the plumber’s side stories a touchstone for many a developer, longing to evoke simpler times.

The latest impressive effort – Wildarts Studio’s Born of Bread – manages to get achingly close to cooking up something that both stirs those nostalgic feelings of Mario’s halcyon days, but at the same time bakes something entirely fresh.

Players assume the role of Loaf, literally bread come to life, as he embarks on an amazing adventure packed with twists, turns, and all manner of heavy-handed puns – exactly what fans are looking for.

However, does this endearing homage rise to the occasion, or does it merely leave you with a soggy bottom? Read our review of Born of Bread to find out!

Story

Born of Bread sets off on a fantastical journey that commences with a group of explorers inadvertently resurrecting malevolent entities from an ancient empire. These beings, determined to revive their long-lost master, embark on a quest to gather the scattered Sunstones. Simultaneously, in the royal bakery, a serendipitous event leads to the creation of Loaf—a sentient pile of dough possessing the potential to become a valiant hero.

The narrative unfolds as Loaf, implicated unfairly in an assault on the queen’s castle, endeavors to clear the baker’s good name while delving into the mysteries surrounding the nefarious interlopers. The quest, imbued with humour, bread-based puns, and quirky characters, exudes a lighthearted aura.

However, the pacing, at times, feels abrupt, lacking in-depth exposition for the introduction of partner characters, resulting in a somewhat fleeting narrative that is nevertheless enjoyable as you whisk through it.

Graphics

Born of Bread adeptly blends 3D environments with 2D character models, delivering a diverse visual landscape that is incredibly crisp and vivid – truly evoking both a sense of the seminal title it’s aping, but also with an enduring charm of its own.

You traverse a good variety of reassuringly tropey locales, from your homely local bakery to verdant forests, cavernous mines and bustling towns.

Character designs, particularly the ensemble of companions, exhibit a delightful charm through their expressive yet somewhat rigid animations. While drawing inspiration from the Paper Mario style, Born of Bread manages to carve its own visual identity, offering a captivating visual experience.

Gameplay

Within Born of Bread’s gameplay lies yet more nods to the revered mechanics of Paper Mario. The journey entails exploration, combat, and unraveling story-driven subplots. However, the sprawling landscapes often teeter between being vast and desolate, at times leading to confusion due to inadequately marked paths. Yet, the thrill of discovery while uncovering hidden treasures remains a noteworthy aspect of the exploration.

Combat mechanics echo traditional RPG structures of turn-based, rhythm-infused combat, wherein Loaf and companions wield a repertoire of abilities and support actions, each demanding WP (mana) consumption. The incorporation of mini-games to augment action effectiveness injects a layer of engagement, albeit with a shallow but involved learning curve.

Furthermore, even the ‘audience participation’ concept of those lauded titles makes an appearance, manifesting as virtual reactions of fans watching the Born of Bread saga unfold
(complete with chat windows!), enriching the combat dynamics and enhancing immersion and theatrics alike.

Born of Bread’s audio landscape – bouncy ditties underpinned with strings and catchy hooks – also seamlessly intertwines with its lighthearted narrative, with Robert Kilpatrick’s score perfectly complementing the light-hearted tone and humour of the story. I am willing to bet that the Lapwing Village theme immediately becomes stuck in your head!

Verdict

Born of Bread embodies the spirit of classic Paper Mario RPGs, presenting an enchanting narrative, engaging combat system, and endearing characters.

However, the odd bug in the bake does impede the overall experience. Despite these shortcomings, the game remains recommended for casual RPG aficionados, offering a fun – yet fulfilling – eight or so hours of dimensionally-challenged adventuring.

Jura Single Malt Scotch Whisky is celebrating its 60th anniversary, and the entire island is joining in the festivities this week!

As part of the on-island celebrations this week, JURA will be serving up a signature Jura cocktail – the Jura 1963. This is an extra special recipe, created to pay homage to the values that have been our community’s guiding light: authenticity, depth and a dedication to creating moments that last a lifetime.

How to make a JURA 1963:

• Add 45ml of JURA Whisky, 5ml of sweet Vermouth and 5ml of Maraschino liqueur to a mixing glass filled with ice.
• Drop two dashes of peach bitters and stir for 20 seconds until chilled.
• Strain the mixture into a chilled martini coupe
• Garnish with a stem cherry
