Catan – Klaus Teuber – 1995 – Players 3-4 (more with expansions) – RRP £49.99

Catan is a board game all about building settlements, cities, roads, resources, and accumulating development cards to score points. The first to ten points wins the game. In Catan each player takes it in turns to roll dice and collect the resources that correspond with the value thrown, they then use those commodities to build settlements and roads around the board. If you don’t have enough of an individual commodity, you can trade with other players – but be careful not to offer the opposition the keys to their victory!

It’s a simple game to understand, and after an initial play through the game becomes a lot quicker to complete. There are certainly tactics and strategy involved which is why we love the game, you can jeopardise the plans of your opposition by building intersecting roads, or blocking their incoming resources with a “robber” to prevent them from scoring. Another interesting factor is the setup of the game, the board is made of separate hexagons and roll numbers which you build together before you start, this makes for a unique board every time you play.

The more players you have, the busier the board will get, and the harder it will be to satisfy your strategy, it makes for more fun but also more contention!

Carcassonne – Klaus-Jürgen Wrede – 2000 – Players 2-5 (more with expansions) – RRP £36.99

Carcassonne is a tile building game where players pick a tile from a central pile and place it by a tile where the sides match in the vein of dominoes. The sides of each tile will include either roads, cities, cloisters (monasteries), or fields. The side of the tile picked must match an adjacent tile which has already been placed. Players also start with 7 meeples (counters) which need to be placed on roads, cities, or cloisters to score points. The more cities, roads and cloisters players build, the higher the points tally accumulated.

It’s an easy game to learn, but expert players will learn to use tactics to steal cities and roads as well as disrupting plans for their opposition, limiting the points available. Strategy becomes a huge part of the game after a few run throughs, and adds an extra dimension causing players to think ahead and play defensively.

The variation on how points are scored will also cause players to think carefully about placing their meeples, for example completed cities when placed will result in 2 points per tile, however if the city is left unfinished or unfortified, at the end of the game when your points are tallied, the cities tiles will only count for 1 point each. So do you build multiple small cities, a couple of large ones, or concentrate on the longest roads – there are several ways to win so play wisely!

Taco! Cat! Goat! Cheese! Pizza! – Dave Campbell – 2018 – Players 2-8 – RRP £10.99

Taco! Cat! Goat! Cheese! Pizza! Or TCGCP as we called it is like the famous, most basic of card games SNAP but on steroids. The setup is the same whereby players will share the shuffled deck out between them, each player then proceeds to place a card from their own deck on the central pile whilst announcing the first option; Taco. The next player places a card from their own pile and calls out Cat, the following player does the same but calls out Goat, and the game continues in that fashion. Eventually a player will call the correct word as it corresponds to the card that has just been played after which all players slam their hand onto the top of the pile and whoever is last must take the pile and add it to their own.

The deck also contains three unique cards (much like a joker) where players will have to complete a task like beating your chest like a gorilla, slapping the table with both hands, or slapping your hands above your head – all with the aim of avoiding picking up the central pile. 

The cards themselves are well designed with nicely designed caricatures on the face-up side of either a Taco, Cat, Goat, Cheese, or Pizza. It’s certainly a game that can be played by families with young children able to get involved and enough interactivity to keep them laughing and entertained. What’s more is that it’s essentially like carrying a deck of cards, easy to take with you on your travels and holidays.

Bananagrams – Rena Nathanson, Abe Nathanson – 2006 – Players 2-6 – RRP £14.99

Bananagrams is an anagram tile game, a bit like playing your personal crossword or Scrabble game in a quicker time frame than competing players. Each player is given a set number of tiles which they have to arrange to create their very own crossword grid. Players will have to take additional letters, exchange letters, or rearrange their entire grid with the aim of using all of your tiles. Once tiles have been used and the first player has completed their crossword grid they have to shout “bananas”, and other players will review to ensure that they’ve not made any mistakes, if they have they are eliminated from the game, but if they’re successful they are then crowned “Top Banana”!

As long words, or words with uncommon letters are not scored any higher than short or basic lettered words, this game is more about speed of thought than having a dictionary for a brain ,meaning any player with a quick mind and hands would be able to challenge their old English professor and still come out on top.

The tiles come in an easy to carry (and easy to pack) banana shaped pouch, it’s a great game to take with you on your travels this summer, all you need is a flat surface to build your grid.

7 Wonders – Antoine Bauza – 2010 – Players 3-7 – RRP £44.99

The aim of the game is to build up your ancient civilisation of which there are 7 to choose – this will become your “wonder board”. The game is set during 3 Ages where players have to acquire cards to develop their wonder, build structures, collect gold, and build armies.

The interesting mechanic in this game is that during each age, once you finish your turn you pass the same set of cards to the player next to you, that way you will have a different hand to play with each of your turns. This results in players knowing what cards you have available to you, advanced players can use this to their benefit to sabotage plans of other players.

Players will be able to rack up points depending on the structures they’ve built and the resources they’ve accumulated as well as the strength of their armies. There are several point-scoring elements to 7 Wonders and it will take a couple of playthroughs to understand the full mechanics, but once you have the hang of it, playing tactically becomes a lot of fun. Some of the unique gaming mechanics really made this game different to others we’d played recently and the ability to play with a different Wonder Board each time will keep things fresh during future runs.

Ticket to Ride: Europe – Alan R. Moon – 2005 – Players 2-5 – RRP £44.99

This is an alternative version of the original Ticket to Ride with some extra point scoring mechanics and of course a different map to play on – Europe as opposed to the original United States of America. The aim of the game is to accumulate points by fulfilling the routes given to them on their “Destination Cards”. Players will obtain railway car cards of 9 different variations and have to use these cards to satisfy the previously mentioned routes.

It’s an easy game to get the hang of and after a single play through it becomes straight forward. When testing the game, we played with 3 players and found that it wasn’t as combative as the likes of Catan and allowed you to play your own game without actively trying to ruin the strategy of others. It is a game however that will become more competitive the more players are involved as there are only a finite amount of routes and sooner or later your opponents will be taking the routes you planned on building on.

Ticket to Ride: Europe is an excellent tabletop game where various methods can be utilised to score the most points. It won’t cause havoc and family break-ups like Monopoly, but it will encourage lots of enjoyable and repeat play time.

Hint – Jesper Bülow, Jonas Resting-Jeppesen – 2014 – Players 4-10 – RRP £29.99

Hint is a party game that becomes more fun the more people are involved. Players will be split into teams and have to either draw, talk, mime, or hum clues so their teammates can guess the answers on the card. It’s a mix of traditional classics such as charades, Articulate, and Pictionary all rolled into one. 

Each card selected has a category on it as well as the action required to give the clues in 90 seconds, for example players might have to hum various songs about cats, or mime Meryl Streep films. Points are gained for each correct guess, however on each card has a “Forbidden Object” which if guessed the team will lose 2 points and these are normally common options related to the clue.

The setup of the game is interesting as it’s played within the box it’s packed in and the counters move around the rim as points are added. There is also a wheel in the centre where cards are placed and offers additional point scoring mechanics.

Hint is well known and the most popular party game played in Scandinavia – as it states on the cover – but has yet to gain similar traction in the UK, after a couple of playthroughs though it’s obvious that this will create some hysterical and embarrassing moments between friends.

Dixit – Jean-Louis Roubira – 2008 – Players 3-8 – Various editions available

Do you know the way your opponents think? Dixit will test that. The idea is to play cards and score points based on what your opponents are thinking. Each player is given a set of cards with beautifully illustrated images on them – all completely random. One player then selects a card but without placing it, makes a statement relating to the imagery shown. The other players then select a card from their own hand which best matches the phrase or statement given earlier, all the cards played are shuffled and laid out face up, all the other players will then decide which card was the main player’s card. The idea is for the main player to be vague enough so that a few but not all of the players choose the card they played, if they are too obvious everyone will select the card they chose and the player will get 0 points.

This is a great game to get you thinking about the ways your opponent’s mind works, using in-jokes, or subjects only a few are knowledgeable can play to your advantage. The card imagery is well designed and each card has enough talking points to think of a unique statement to get other players thinking. The game certainly tests your imagination, where being creative will place you in good stead.

Verdict

Tabletop games have always been a fun way of interacting with those close to you, they provide entertainment while not involving watching a screen, and whilst movies, TV, and video games hold great value, tabletop gaming is something we could all benefit from. The games we tested all provide a unique playing style and none would be considered boring. Some provided more laughs like Taco! Cat! Goat! Cheese! Pizza! or Hint, while others require strategy like Catan or Ticket to Ride: Europe. Some of these games can also be played and completed in less than half (Bananagrams, Dobble) an hour and are great for filling time with a quick distraction.

After taking a year-long hiatus last year with the release of  the ‘Mavrik’ range, Callaway have returned with EPIC in 2021 with a new set of drivers bearing the iconic green colourway and and we got two grips with their ‘SPEED’ model to see just how good it is.

The new 2021 range of drivers come in 3 models, those being Max, LS and Speed and all three drivers serve a different purpose, give different feedback and cater to a different type of player depending on what you want. All three however are manufactured using AI technology and built around Callaways ‘Jailbreak frame’ and technology.

Jailbreak frame

The Jailbreak frame is not new to Callaway but in the ’21 EPIC, Callaway has looked to seek improvements in its structural design making it the fastest driver Callaway has released.

In previous versions, Callaway had looked to add rigidity to the frame but now with AI, there is an increased element of stability.

In fact, the Jailbreak frame is designed to stiffen the body in 3 different directions. Horizontally, vertically and torsionally to generate even more ball speed.

The Jailbreak frame doesn’t do its magic in isolation either. Callaway has added AI in their new titanium-based Flash Face and with their new Cyclone Aero shape, driver head design all work harmoniously together to create a forgiving experience with greater clubhead speed.

Design

Make no mistake about it, The new 2021 EPIC is one of the most beautiful looking drivers on the market right now.

Its iconic Hulk green colourways and sporty finishes are a joy to look at but it also feels premium at the same time. With a less is more approach it’s not overbearing on the design at address.

Its simplicity is what makes it attractive and it really enables you to stay focussed on the Callaway chevon ball marker without any distractions. You’ll also get glimpses of the titanium Flash Face and huge sweet spot marker to aid forgiveness and consistent ball striking. Its bold and sleek body look as aero-dynamic as it feels on the takeaway and we love the tiny pinstriping details on the back.

Probably the best-looking part of the driver at address is how the Carbon fibre bounces off the head of the driver depending on the light. Tee off with this thing on a sunny day and it looks gorgeous.

If the top EPIC Speed is Bruce Banner. Clean cut and smart, then the bottom definitely feels like his alter-ego.  A mean green machine.

There is a lot going on when you turn the driver over to reveal its sole. The first thing you’ll notice is the middle strip bearing the moniker “SPEED” which also acts as a division point splitting the driver in half. On the front half you’ll see where the Jailbreak technology is connected to the clubface with four emerald-like jewels and on the back you can see even more aerodynamic engineering at play with three fins designed to cut up resistance directly underneath the weight port.

Another feature we loved that has made it’s across to the new range is the Optifit Hosel where the player can change the loft and lie angle simply by spinning the dials creating the perfect optimisation for their game. The benefit of having the Optifit hosel is that the shaft doesn’t rotate at all so need to re-align anything at a later date.

Performance

So how fast does the SPEED driver actually feel? In short, it feels pretty fast.

Given that in testing we already had a slow(ish) swing speed, on impact, the balls felt really explosive off the face and the club felt lighter and faster and definitely more forgiving.

Even our off-centre shots felt a lot more corrected and there was a lot more consistency on the drives which in turn helped us gain more confidence throughout the rounds.

Even at 460cc, at address, the club did look a bit smaller than say a Ping but the Flash Face really helps you drive the ball home and visualise your strike.

Whilst it felt light in the hand the EPIC SPEED felt incredibly balanced and really gave good feedback at the Moment Of Inertia.

Ball striking almost felt effortless and the sound off the face was superb. Overall this is probably the longest driver we’ve ever used as well as the most forgiving.

Whilst we weren’t professionally fitted for our version, there are still a few more yards and added consistency to squeeze out of the SPEED which is a massive positive.

Conclusion

Overall, we haven’t got anything bad to say about the 2021 EPIC SPEED. Both its design and performance surpassed our expectations and it’s been an absolutely joy to use.

The sound and feel felt really premium and whilst they are only a few improvements vs the previous EPIC range, they are definitely improvements making this a contender for one of the best drivers Callaway has ever made.

With SPEED being the fastest out of the three in the range, Callaway has done a good job in covering all bases with the options available with the LS and Max versions available too.

Whilst the price may be steep for some, we’d say the forgiveness and confidence this club offers outweighs the cost.

With so many options available from Callaway and given the price tag, we would recommend getting fitted for the club to really get the most out of it and getting the right EPIC for you.

Throughout the ages and across all industries we are constantly met with ingenious design, a design that sometimes is so good that they manage to stand the test of time. Think Porsche headlights, Converse all-stars or even a Rolex Submariner.

In golf, if you think putters, you think odyssey and if you think odyssey putters you think ‘White hot’. It’s as simple as that.

The ‘White Hot’ range has been trusted wand across the globe by both amateurs and pro golfers on tour and now 20 years later, the ‘White Hot’ range is back with a facelift in the form of the ‘White Hot OG’.

History of the White Hot

Since its inception in the year 2000, the Odyssey White Hot range has been adored by golfers of all playing ability. The best designs usually come in the form of starting with a problem and looking for a way to solve it, In Odyssey, The Callaway owned company went on to do just that.

During the late ’90s, Callaway was going from strength to strength as a brand and on the golfing circuit with notable products like the ‘Big Bertha’ and from a recruitment process, they were bringing in the best minds to aid their R&D.

With the help of Billiard designer Richard C Helmsetter (Who went on to become Callaway VP) and engineers from Du Pont and Boeing, Callaway golf went on to sink $170m into more R&D and they went on to design and manufacture the ‘Rule 35 Golf ball’, which according to Callaway at the time was the complete golf ball as it had a balance of control, distance, spin and feel.

But why is this important to the story?

Well, In 1997 the Odyssey sports group was acquired by Callaway. With some incredible talent in HR and with money at their disposal, Callaway/Odyssey went on to design one of the most iconic products in golf. The White Hot Putter range.

With contact, touch and feel so important in putting stroke, Callaway figured what could feel better than putting a ball than using well, another golf ball?

Using the same Urethrane cover on the Rule 35, an insert was created to go into the putter itself which would go onto change the way putting felt forever. Its soft feel but firm contact made it extremely balanced with its rebound easy to control, which is why it went on to be used by tour players worldwide.

Since the original insert was created, ‘White Hot’ has gone on to create 9 variations of the original with the 9th being the re-release ‘OG’ and in terms of success, the insert has gone on to claim 100 PGA tour wins including 48 majors. Truly astonishing.

As the saying goes, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. So why exactly have Callaway re-released the iconic range of putters and are they any different to their predecessors?

We believe any great product can’t stay still and stagnant forever. There will always be room for nostalgia but in a high-performance sport where wins are decided in high-pressure situations, every centimetre matters.

From an Odyssey perspective, the relaunch of the product was only done because they listened. They listened to their customers, tour pros and their staff.

There could be no compromise on the original, the putter had to be improved only where it could no matter how subtle the changes, Odyssey were not trying to re-imagine the wheel when it came to this release, there is too much riding on it and the loyalty runs deep.

So what exactly has changed if anything in the new White Hot range?

Well, in short, nothing much has changed from a design perspective on the whole range of White Hot.

The 2-part Urethane white hot insert remains the same and in terms of the shapes of the putters, they too remain unchanged. The main differences come in the form of cosmetic design, shafts and grips.

On the surface of the new putters, you’ll find they’re finished in a premium silver PVD finish and if you look even closer you’ll find fine milling on the putter face which blends both the best of the old with the technology of the new really bringing the putter into the ages.

The new Grey DFX also adds an extra layer of comfort and feel for the putter and compliments.

One of the final differences we find in the range of the new White Hot range is the ability to customise your putter in the form of weight kits. The Odyssey White Hot OG – 2-ball

The most iconic putter in golf is back and from the whole range of new White Hot, it’s no secret that the 2-ball will be the most sought after putter from the range from the golfing community as a whole.

When we first heard the 2-ball was making a return, we knew it was something we needed to see and take for a test drive.

Design

Given that we were already big fans of the original 2-ball, the news that there would be very subtle changes to the new OG was met with nothing but relief.

8 versions later, the 2-ball is back to the way the artists truly intended it to be and everything that should be changed has been.

The 2-ball now has a modern facelift but keeps its original design. It’s at address when the nostalgia really starts to kick in and you’re looking down at the iconic dual ball design.

We really liked the big bold OG typeface on the bottom of the putter itself and were extremely pleased with the weight kit addition, something we’ll definitely be toying around with in the future.

To support the big bold OG typeface and the bold red colours on the new premium tumbled leather headcover is that beautiful candy red ‘Stroke Lab’ shaft. It really makes the putter pop.

The new DFX grip really works in harmony with the red accents with its cool grey finish and it feels extremely comfortable in the hand. Whilst some may prefer a fatter grip we felt very connected to the putter through this new grip giving your thumbs a really natural feeling resting point.

Performance

Moving over from one putter shape to another is never an easy transition and it was the same for us having used a blade for so long to then trying a mallet.

Fortunately for us, the 2-ball is one of the easiest mallets to use on the market with one of the simplest and innovative alignment tools.

It wasn’t long before we got used to it and started to manage the touch of the ‘White Hot’ insert.

Distance control was extremely easy to pick up regardless of the putting surface and we were managing to turn cut our 3 putts down into 2 by around 50%.

Anything for 5 foot in gives you a real sense of confidence of following an invisible line with the 2-ball and we found our takeaway a lot easier to control given the lightness of the new shaft.

The ‘Stroke Lab’ shaft almost feels as though it’s not there and you feel even more connected to the putter head.

We didn’t get to test the putter with new weights but it’s definitely something we’ll be trying out to see if we can increase accuracy and consistency even further.

Verdict

It’s extremely hard not to love the Odyssey 2-ball putter if you’ve used one before and there is a reason why it’s been given the legendary status it has.

We’d say the updates to this putter are enough to sway anyone using the old version and definitely something any new punter should look into or at least try if they’re in the market for a new wand.

For us, the magic of the 2-ball is far from its expiration date and the new OG version will no doubt solidify its space in Golf history even further.

As casual boxing fans are treated to exhibitions that mean little besides lining the pockets of the competitors, today we are treated to a genuinely anticipated bout between two of the world’s best pugilists. Mexico’s Canelo Alvarez faces off and will defend his WBC and WBA belts against Billy Joe Saunders who will be putting his WBO strap on the line.

It’s been a long time coming.

A fight that’s been talked about for years finally hits the mat, and our screens. Tentative agreements had fallen through in the past, and the risk of losing this bout once more was hovering this past week when disagreements regarding the ring size threatened the matchup. But as of now, barring a catastrophe, the wily and outspoken Billy Joe Saunders finally does battle with the often cool and reserved Canelo Alvarez.

That trademark reservation however is tinged with red, Canelo claims that “this fight is personal”, not something he usually admits. That’s to say that Billy Joe Saunders and his jovial, often mischievous taunts and behaviour have added some extra motivation. Perhaps not something that Billy Joe Saunders can help – possibly due to his relatively smaller profile compared to Canelo. 

Saunders is undefeated after 30 fights, whereas Canelo fought his only loss in 58 when the then 23-year-old faced Floyd Mayweather in 2013. It’s fair to say Canelo has come on leaps and bounds since then, and in his career has collected world titles at 4 different weight classes ranging from Light Middleweight to Light Heavyweight – this bout takes place in the Super Middleweight division. Saunders, a 2 weight world champion with a solid amateur pedigree hasn’t on paper-faced as tougher tasks as Canelo may have, but he tends to rise to the challenge and level of threat posed by his opponent, and it would be foolish to think his relative lack of top-class opponents would lead to him being dismantled much like some of the other Brits the Mexican fighter has faced.

State of the art venue

The AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas will host the fight as 70,000 people are expected in the state-of-the-art home of the Dallas Cowboys NFL franchise. And as fans return, the electric atmosphere will house a contingent that vastly favours Canelo. Not that that will bother Saunders who seems to be relishing this challenge – when he’s not throwing jibes. The two had to be separated during their meeting on Wednesday but since then, they have remained more civil, focusing on the task at hand.

One of the perceived trouble areas for Canelo has been his ability to handle matchups against southpaw fighters, which is the stance that Saunders favours. Whilst Canelo tends to pass these tests, some of these bouts have seen him take more damage than usual. This allows Saunders to exploit a weakness in a game that’s almost bulletproof. They both have power, however, Saunders relies on his boxing more than brute strength.

Canelo has demonstrated the greater ability to knock his opponents out over the course of his career having stopped 37 fighters out of his 55 wins. Something that both also possess in droves is their ability to be mobile and avoid getting hit. This could be prevalent in the first half of the fight as both fighters look to gain rhythm and feel each other out. Again, they both have great ring IQ and will measure up almost even when considering skillsets. 

It’s hard to compare the two

It is genuinely tough to measure the level of ability when comparing these two fighters however – while seemingly having many similarities, their rise through the ranks has been vastly different. Canelo turned professional when he was 15 leading to him having 58 fights by the time he was 30. Whereas Saunders had a more traditional amateur career, even having qualified and fought at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Canelo is now seen as the pound-for-pound king after having impressive victories against the likes of Sergey Kovalev, Gennady Golovkin, and Miguel Cotto. Unseating the fighter widely regarded as the best in the world would be the greatest professional moment in the Hatfield-based fighter’s career.

It’ll be on DAZN

The fight will be shown on DAZN’s streaming service and fight fans here in the UK can subscribe for £1.99/month. While DAZN has established itself as a strong international broadcaster, this fight will surely have UK fight fans attracted to the service. This is compounded by Eddie Hearn agreeing to promote some of his fights on the network. The card will begin at 1 a.m. on Sunday as the bout between the two is expected to start circa 4 a.m.

Prediction

CRISP. are not going against the grain here. While Billy Joe Saunders does pose some serious questions for Saul Alvarez, we predict a tightly fought Unanimous Decision victory for the Mexican ace.

Following the Holloway vs. Kattar and Chiesa vs. Magny events, the UFC continues its new year run at Fight Island – Etihad Stadium, Abu Dhabi, with another fantastic card this weekend. This includes the highly anticipated return of Conor McGregor who faces the challenge of perennial contender Dustin Poirier. With much history between the two lets breakdown the fight as well as the co-main event between Dan Hooker and Michael Chandler.

Dustin Poirier vs. Conor McGregor (Lightweight)

A lot has changed since the first bout between the two fighters in their Featherweight clash at UFC 178 in September 2014. McGregor went onto become the most famed fighter in the UFC as well as a business mogul, while Poirier went onto establish himself as a highly-respected stalwart of the Lightweight division, claiming interim gold against Max Holloway. Poirier’s only loss in his last 8 fights came at the hands of Khabib Nurmagomedov, McGregor’s most recent conqueror. The first matchup was won by McGregor in spectacular fashion after Poirier was downed and beaten by a flurry of punches in the first round, and while anything can happen in MMA, Poirier is much improved in almost every facet since then.

This leaves much intrigue around the fight, while Conor is a heavy odds-on favourite, Dustin’s relentless style and strong chin might allow him to do some damage if he manages to catch Conor off-guard. Whether Poirier wants to fight on the inside or outside, Conor is a difficult puzzle to solve though. In his last fight, Conor demonstrated his innovative offence with his shoulders doing great damage to the face of Cowboy Cerrone while they were in a clinch. Of course fighting Conor at range leaves one exposed to the damaging straight left which reaches its target with the velocity of a hydraulic piston.

Poiriers run as of late demands respect having faced only the upper echelons of the division, and strong performances against them all will instill the level of confidence necessary when facing other elite fighters. His aggressive style is always entertaining and a win here would see his profile catapulted beyond the knowledge of a casual fan.

An interesting difference seen in both fighters is the lack of animosity between the two. In the leadup to the first fight, Conor was on his usual trend of getting inside his opponents head, and Poirier fought with emotion which became detrimental to his game plan and fuelled his desire to engage. This time however, there has barely been a negative word spoken between the two combatants and they have heaped praise on each other’s accomplishments and skill sets. Whether or not this will be a factor in the fight remains to be seen. Perhaps it’s maturity shining through, or McGregor figures Poirier is not susceptible to those tactics anymore.

Prediction: While there are many interesting factors affecting the fight, we don’t see the result changing from their first bout. A finish coming in the second round this time after some to and fro action in the first round for Conor.

Dan Hooker vs. Michael Chandler (Lightweight)

The co-main event sees Michael Chandler in his UFC debut having held the Lightweight title in Bellator on three separate occasions. The wrestling prodigy steps in against the rugged and rangy New Zealander Dan Hooker who took the fight when many others in the division rejected the opportunity. There’s a lot to lose and little to gain fighting an unranked but notoriously dangerous newcomer, but Hooker is that kind of guy. He’s continued to face top competition against ranked opponents and for the most part has come out on top. His last bout was against Dustin Poirier in a fight of the year candidate losing in a unanimous decision.

Michael Chandler whilst being a relative unknown to those who are exposed to only the UFC, his dominating wrestling and strong right hand will pose a threat to Hooker who himself is a strong puncher unafraid to turn a tactical affair into a street fight. The right hand of Chandler has been a great weapon in many of his wins in Bellator with victories coming from downing opponents and leaping on them with consistent right hands raining down until the stoppage.

Despite being in the UFC since 2014, Dan Hooker’s rise to prominence in the past couple of years has come from his willingness to take challenging bouts one after another, and him being able to utilise his kickboxing prowess to great effect against highly touted opponents.

Prediction: Hooker to win with a unanimous decision after another bloody battle and Fight of the Night honours. Chandler to show that despite “upgrading” promotions, he will still be a highly ranked lightweight moving forward.

Further down the card we also have Scotland’s Joanne Calderwood up against American Jessica Eye and the ever entertaining Brazilian Amanda Ribas against her countrymate Marina Rodriguez.

The main card starts at 3am in the early hours of Sunday morning in the UK and fans will be able to catch it all on BT Sport Box Office.

Khabib Nurmagomedov (C) vs. Justin Gaethje

In May of this year, UFC 249 was supposed to headlined by Khabib Nurmagomedov against long time rival Tony Ferguson, but the ill-fated bout had to be changed due to travel restrictions at the height of the Covid outbreak as Khabib was stuck in Russia.

This left Justin Gaethje with a chance to step in at short notice and stake his claim as a forerunner in the Lightweight division in a battle for the Interim title.

Despite Gaethje’s ferocious power, the skill of Ferguson – and a 12 fight unbeaten streak – led him to be counted as the bookies favourite, however, Gaethje was able to show his prowess and win via stoppage in the 5th round. This meant that a unification bout against the man from Dagestan, the pound for pound MMA king, Khabib Nurmagomedov would be next if all went according to plan.

 Thankfully in spite of the ever-changing landscape, the fighters have been tested, are at the fight location, and have weighed-in on target for the match up. Khabib will exclaim that weight cutting is tough and had to use a towel as cover this time to allow for any extra weight to be removed as he was being measured. Now we can simply look forward to a captivating clash of styles.

Both have extremely strong wrestling capabilities however watching them, you’ll see that their wrestling differs quite massively. While Justin has enough power to take his opposition down, its Khabib who is able to remain on top of his opponents and smother them on the ground without offering a moments respite.

It has to be said though that the power lies with Justin Gaethje, he holds concussive force and in the blink of an eye could leave any opponent in a heap on the ground. If the fight does get taken down to the may however, Justin Gaethje has great pedigree in being able to pop right up again resisting the ground pressure of his previous opponents. Khabib is a different proposition though.

 Personal tragedy recently has stuck the Nurmagomedov family with Khabib’s father sadly passing away, not that Khabib needed any motivation, it’s without a doubt that his father will be in his thoughts as he prepares for this huge matchup.

Prediction: We expect this fight to be managed well by Khabib, despite Justin’s ability to resist pressure, the relentlessness of Khabib should overcome in the latter rounds. A submission finish for the champion in round 4 if he avoids enough clean hits from his opponent.

Robert Whittaker vs. Jared Cannonier

The co-main event pits the antipodean former champion Robert Whittaker, against the American Jared Cannonier. Cannonier’s rise up the middleweight ranks is nothing short of amazing given he began his UFC career as a heavyweight.

Now at middleweight, it doesn’t seem like he’s lost much power if any having dispatched the likes of David Branch, Jack Hermansson, and – albeit an older and less dangerous – Anderson Silva, all with TKO/KO victories. A win here should earn either fighter a chance at the Middleweight strap held by Israel Adesanya.

 Robert Whittaker however has already faced Israel, as well as the rest in the division, so his pedigree is undoubted. He is skilled in every facet, with superb striking, speed, ground game, and resilience.

The consensus and bookies are calling for this bout to go all three rounds and for Whittaker to take the decision, and it’s not difficult to see that happening despite Cannonier’s overwhelming strength. Whittaker will be looking to gain a rematch against the champion whom he lost to at UFC 243 in October 2019.

Both fighters have been cordial but have also shown extreme confidence with Whittaker claiming he is better in every way, and Cannonnier in his ever so likeable fashion aiming to overpower his opponent.

Prediction: We’re going against the grain here and calling on Jared Cannonier to add to his list of victims with a powerful finish in the second round.

Continuing on, the card also hosts bouts between Alexander Volkov and Walt Harris, and Alex Oliveira against the unbeaten Shavkat Rakhmonov. As always, the diverse card displays technical skill, power, a variety of fight styles, resilient fighters, and should prove entertaining.

Viewers in the UK will be especially lucky in that the main card begins at 7pm and will be available to viewers on BT Box Office.

The general market for WIFI 6 routers sees devices ranging from anywhere upwards of £150. Honor, a division of Huawei recently released the Honor Router 3 and it is available on Amazon for nearly half the cost of its competition. Does it stack up though considering its relatively cheap price.

Design

It must be said that of all the WIFI 6 routers out there with multiple antennas sticking out in any which direction, there has been more thought in the simplistic but sleek design of the Honor Router 3. Its 4 antennae whilst being quite wide, flick up and stand as masts against the slim base.

 The simplicity continues when it comes to the available ports and additional design features. 4 ethernet ports (one WAN and three LAN) accompany the power supply, reset button, LED indicator, and a single multifunction button atop the device.

 All in all, the router is well designed, aesthetically pleasing and trumps its competition in the form factor department.

Technology

As consumers who rely on the internet for all kinds of information, entertainment, and communication, WIFI has improved a great deal since the days of hearing that familiar dial up tone – WIFI 6 is newer technology that promises better and more reliable connectivity, speed, and security as well as reduced power consumption.

There are several devices including some of Huawei’s own smartphones and accessories that will be compatible with WIFI 6 as will more recently released devices from other brands.

 The router also sports a dual core 1.2 GHz CPU processor, 2.4 and 5 GHz bands allowing for multiple devices, mesh networking and theoretical speeds of up to 3000 Mbps. These are statistics that should beat the stock hubs supplied by likes of BT or Sky.

 The opportunity to connect two Honor Router 3 devices in a mesh network provides additional support in expanding your coverage supposedly eliminating those regions within your household or office where you’d normally experience a black hole, lacking any semblance of connectivity.

 In our tests which lasted for two weeks, we found that our signal strength was greater than before whereby our devices would normally lose signal if we stepped outside, but the Honor Router 3 provided us with a couple of bars, enough to browse without any trouble.

The download speed also seemed to increase on several of the devices we tested including an Apple MacBook Pro, iPhone 10 and Samsung S10+. The stability of the connection was evident as we didn’t experience a drop in its connection, stalling, or buffering of any videos throughout our testing.

 We also connected 10 devices to the router at one time, and it handled streaming movies from our NAS server with consummate ease. The real test however will come in larger offices where there are more than a dozen members of staff all using their devices simultaneously.

Verdict

With its smart looks and affordable price point, the Honor Router 3 will provide the general consumer with a great option for a more reliable internet experience. Signal and speed are both improved – but that’s compared to your stock routers obtained from your ISP. There are several other WIFI 6 devices that could potentially outperform the Honor Router 3 – however they are not priced in the same bracket.

If however, you are looking for a router that will facilitate a larger office, traditional networking options may be advisable as we have so far been unable to test the effectiveness of the mesh network.
